1st Energy Becomes The 1st Australian Energy Retailer To Go Crypto
1st Energy will become the first Australian energy retailer ever to accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment in a new partnership with cryptocurrency payment merchant BitPay. As of March 4th 2022, customers will be able to pay for their energy services by selecting from a variety of cryptocurrencies offered.
BitPay, founded in the US in 2011, acts as a payment merchant for prominent global companies such as AT&T, Camping World, DISH Network, Microsoft, Newegg and WeWork. BitPay is the largest cryptocurrency payment provider worldwide.
Customers will be able to pay in their preferred cryptocurrency with no additional fees or charges applied from 1st Energy in a smooth and secure process. The customer will see a QR code with the exact amount of crypto needed for the transaction and that price is locked for 15 minutes ensuring the customer has ample time to make payment.
1st Energy recognises the growth and prominence of cryptocurrency on a wider economic scale and the need to provide customers with payment alternatives. “As a smaller retailer, we are all about choice, and part of that is giving customers the option to pay the way they want,” said 1st Energy representative Felix Baillie.
“Cryptocurrency is going mainstream and there are millions of consumers who want to pay for everyday items like energy services and 1st Energy is taking the lead across Australia to make that available,” said Merrick Theobald, Vice President of Marketing for BitPay.
BitPay supports 13 leading cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Dogecoin (DOGE), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) and XRP (XRP), and five USD-pegged stable coins (BUSD, DAI, GUSD, USDC and USDP).
